You're comparing apples to oranges here. I'm sure whoever bought The Bowpromo did not buy it for the music it contained but bought it because he/she wanted to add that particular piece of vinyl to their collection. They most likely already own a copy on CDR/HD whatever. For all those collectors whose collections are on HD they are worth zero but I'm sure you/we don't collect Bowie for the investment value. I collect Bowie material because I like to listen to it. Wish I'd had the spare cash to have bid on this item.  :)

I personally don't feel like I ever really 'own' downloads. They remain intangible and as a child of the 70s I like to have physical media. I wouldn't pay those sort of prices - I must admit some of the sums people are spending seem ludicrous to me. In some cases however we can gawp at the  huge outlay but that is up to them.

If it is a nice set, or special edition on silvers etc. etc. I always consider purchase - I may already have it but that is my choice - after all I have multiple versions of official releases.

I can't see how you can really put a value on an HDD collection certainly it isn't really a genuine legal asset - although I may be completely wrong and often am!😳. So the apples and oranges comment is probably valid.

This resource is fantastic and I am delighted to be part of it.

I still collect silvers and boots etc. - I enjoy them, like my guitars they are always of value and are always saleable so that will do me.

Yes, when I began acquiring music, LPs and 8-tracks were basically it. There were also the large reel-to-reel tape machines. We had one to record radio shows and some records.

I still prefer the tangible item as well when possible/practical. On the other hand digital takes up much less space and in some ways is much more durable. I just think sometimes about using a carrier that will become obsolete (anyone remember 5" floppies?) or unstable. Although normally it's easy enough (if time-consuming) to transfer.

The big danger is losing it if the carrier fails (backup, backup, backup).

I can see why someone would be willing to spend a lot of money on the Bowpromo. The value is in the item itself and what it represents in terms of history, rarity, etc. I'm assuming the person who bought it is a rather serious collector. In US dollars he/she spent $5200. But the Bowpromo would be a jewel to add to his/her collection.

As I said I have both - material from resources like this one - and this site is a treasure that must be maintained - and 'tangible' items. At the moment and who knows for how long the market for even 'run of the mill' stuff is pretty ridiculously inflated. You will find the odd item only at a reasonable price.

There are a lot of people out there who seem desperate to spend money - I'm not one of them.

Exactly.  I agree 100%.

wasn't trying to compare really was meant to be showing what value something's have and what some members have put into their collections buying discs to share as at some stage a lot of these discs (including Bowpromo auctioned at no reserve so could of gone for a quid) were originally purchased before being shared,

I've got stuff in my own collection caused a lot of family hassles and people wonder why I have Official like Black book 2013 edition But also acquired a '80 first pressing. CD London Boy , Book Bowie in His Own Words '82,'84 pressings My ex wife asked why 2 copies of each, 2 different covers why else, 4 different versions of reality CD all different Bonus disc, then Silvers & cdr when I've got on Hdd the list goes on, my son's even asked did Mum realise how much stuff you had packed away, By what I lost in '84 she probably had an idea there would be a amount somewhere
Though haven't seemed to of got much vinyl but it may slowly build

Yeah I'm same back ordered a whole lot of back issue uncut magazines and they came through as digital and I have to go to site and sign in to read them even though I paid a cover price was expecting Hard copies :(

I think there are some interesting things in his thread.

What is the value of a digital collection? Monetary properly nothing, depending on who you ask. When film companies tries to get money out of people that have shared or downloaded film files it seems as the value is enormous based on the same amount of unsold tickets or sales of DVD's, we off course all know that downloading or streaming something is very far from meaning that one would otherwise have made a purchase to access the content.

I don't consider my digital collection of music, bootlegs or rips of my own CD collection to have any monetary value, but it has a large personal value for me, and I love the funny value of 957,000,000 GBP, it is straight film company way of calculating.

Lofric and kiwikid makes a good point when they say they don't really feel like they own the downloads. I think this is one of the reason that I make the covers for some of them, to make them mine. I do miss the object but I don't miss the space they took, I still have not burned a CD and printed the covers of any of the recording I did a cover for, when I make them I pretend they are for vinyl. And I don't want to buy someone else's CD of the material we already have here. The only music object I didn't rip and put in storage is my record collection, I cant help myself, no matter what I do it keeps growing :-@

The only place I can see "1972" is in the image of a book the seller included to explain the significance of the 1969 Purcell rooms gig. They look kosher to me.
