I have a long FLAC file which I'd like to split into its individual tracks. What is the best way to do this? Labels in Audacity don't appear to be working for me.

I would decode the flac-files to .wav and than cut it with ......what You got..., after cuting just encode back to flac, if You want smaler files.

Do you have a .cue file? Also, what OS are you using?

...and then my mind split open.

I use Goldwave for most editing, and it's OK coping with FLAC.

Don't blame me, I didn't do it!

You need to cut on sector boundaries to avoid gaps of silence. So if you're on Windows, try CDwave.

http://www.milosoftware.com/en/index.php?body=cdwave.php

It's easy, you just load the long file, and it displays it as a long waveform. As you add cut points each song gets it own color, so its easy to see what you've done. Or just load a cue file if you were given one.

I don't use it for anything other than splitting files, but I think it does other things too.

If you're on Ubuntu, open a terminal.

Type:

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo apt-get install cuetools shntool flac

then

cuebreakpoints '<cue file>' | shnsplit -o flac '<audio flac file>'

Just make sure the flac and cue files are in the same directory, and cd to that directory before the last command. It's that easy.

Oh, and if it's any other type of file, just replace flac with that extension.

...and then my mind split open.

I would recommend CUETools. It is free and it also includes the excellent ripper CUERipper that is as good as EAC but much simpler to use.

http://cue.tools/wiki/CUETools_Download

This is the best cue splitter available, as far as I know. I wouldn't use Medieval CUE Splitter because it is not safe to use and it alters the integrity of the files. It can also introduce clicks and jitter in the beginning/end of the saved files. This is a well known problem with Medieval CUE Splitter, do a quick search and see by yourself.

CUETools is 100% safe and accurate, even if it is not as straightforward to use as Medieval CUE splitter, but it is not too difficult to use. Foobar2000 can also split FLAC files and it is safe to use.

I hope this helps.

If you have Cubase or Nuendo it can work directly with FLAC as well as exporting to FLAC.
Just remember to set the Zero Crossing point to ON.
