Hi there,

Glad I checked my spam folder as I found the email from MWP with the link to here  :-)

The site looks great, hopefully I will be able to upload a couple of vinyl boots. I've not got loads but a few is better than nothing. Will upload them as 24/96. (got loads of Led Zep & The Doors if anyone like them)

Also going to see Tony Visconti & Woody Woodmansey with Glen Gregory doing the Man who sold the world tonight (really looking forward to that) in Glasgow. I'm going to try & record it. Never recorded a concert before so not sure if it will be a success or not. I'll be using a Tascam DR-05 v2 (don't know if thats's any good, if the finished result is I'll upload it.)

If anyone got any tips on recording, that would be great

Speak later

Stephen

Welcome badvok. Glad you found the place.

Enjoy the show tonight (your time). Wish I could see them but I doubt they'll head south of the equator.

Re: Taping.

I've not used or seen a DR-05 but I'm guessing you'll be using the internal mics. If it will fit in a shirt pocket try and keep the line between you and the speaker stack in line (no obstructions).

I'm guessing the record volume scale goes from 1 to 10. If so set it to 5 - (if the recorded audio is low in volume it's easy to amplify it. An overloaded/distorted capture can't be fixed).

Make sure you have fresh batteries.

Seeing that you intend to record at 24/96 you should have at least an 8gb card in the recorder.

Make sure the limiter is "off".

My taping time is more than 25 years ago but I have another advice:

Keep away from chatterers, notorious shouters/screamers and hand clappers.

Good luck with the recording!

Hey there,

Concert was one of the best I've been to in a long time, the recording was not  :-(
We got there late & missed the support band, we were only in less than 5 min when ode to joy started playing (didn't last more than 30 sec) so quickly started pressing the buttons, Though I was in the right settings menu & set everything to what I thought was good but I was doing settings for an external mics not for the internal mics Also was caught by a steward & was told to put it away, so that flustered me a bit too but looking back on it now I don't think he was that bothered but at the time I was, thought I might get thrown out & miss it myself so stuck it in my shirt pocket thinking everything was fine. I was gutted when I got home & played it back. The peak indicator light was on constant.Sorry for being such a newb  :(

Nobody will blame you for this badvok. This is what normally happens when you start with a new thing.
I hope you still could enjoy the show.

Yeah I totally loved the show, the recorder was in my shirt pocket. Never checked it till I got home.
At the show bought the vinyl album of the MWSTW (live at O2 Shepherd's Bush. Only contains the album not the non-album tracks) & also bought the signed 7" single  :)

Sorry to hear that badvok! Bummer eh?!  :-(

I saw them on Sunday in Colchester. Another fine gig albeit a little different in the support act in that Norwich had two acoustic supports whilst Colchester had Morgan and Jess Visconti doing a kind of a Yazoo act which actually worked well I thought. Mind you, you know when you're getting old when you're next to a speaker thinking "Bugger this for a game of soldiers. It's so loud I'm going to have to move...!" :-) And I did but closer to the front. At least the bass stopped thudding through my body...

I queued up afterwards and had a quick chat with them all whilst getting the LP signed by the band excluding Berenice Scott who didn't appear. Hannah Berridge Ronson came across nicely as did James Stevenson who said that he was inspired by Ronno to take up the guitar after I congratulated him on his (almost) perfect version, for me anyway, of Moonage Daydream.

Hope they tour again as it's good to hear the old tunes as they were (almost) originally intended!

Hi there,  regarding my attempt at recording the show.... I've been listening to the file on my computer and it does not sound that bad. I've done a spectral analyser on it.

Does that look ok or is is the recording knackered?

Once again I'm a bit of a newb at this too

Cheers

It's impossible to gauge a recording through a picture.

badvok. Check your PM's.

Hi badvok,

The important check is your ears!  If it sounds good, it's good.

If it's slightly oversaturated (a little bit of squaring on the peaks of the waves) iZotope RX has a declipper tool, that restores the peaks.  No idea how it works, but I think that magic is involved somewhere!

But the ears test is the main one.

Don't blame me, I didn't do it!

That's exactly what I say.

A further point is: It is better to have a maybe not so good recording instead of having no recording.

That's true but it can also be taken too far for those of us who remember the MWP "Bowie Duffers Challenge" from back in 2011!  :-)

Hi there,

I still think the audio sounds good & would like to upload & share it with Bowie Station but don't want to upload something that is not up to scratch. I tried to send it to another member of here to see if they could work some magic but have had problems sending the large file (2.3 gig flac 24/96) for some reason it does not seem to complete (using www.wetransfer.com)

I've tried using Audacity to see if I could improve the recording. First step I done was manual de-amplification of the audio by 10 db, then ran clip fix.I was expecting an improvement in audio but it sounds the same. I presume the amount of de-amplification depends on how much the audio is clipped, maybe 10 db is not enough for my audio. Is there a way for determining a precise amount of de-amplification or is it trial and error?

Here's a sample of the audio with nothing done to it, is it de-clipping that the audio requires or is it something else, or is it fine to upload the way it is? any help would be great

Thanks
