A new landmark film, David Bowie: The First Five Years, is coming to BBC Two in 2019 and BBC Four will broadcast David Bowie at Glastonbury 2000 in October 2018.

David Bowie: The First Five Years is the final part of the trilogy of films, all made by BBC Studios Production, looking back on the legendary performer’s life and work. It follows the acclaimed and award-winning David Bowie: The Last Five Years in 2017 and David Bowie: Five Years in 2013, all produced and directed by Francis Whately.

So the BBC Four HD Glaso highlights broadcast was crystal clear and not just a cheap upscale. What a shame there'll be no blu-ray.

It seems that there was no multitrack audio recorded and we have the same mix as previously available with it's flaws. It sounds like there has been an attempt to make the most of it with a remaster at least.

Apparently, and I have to say I don’t myself understand the engineering obstacles, but apparently there was no consideration made in the design specs of the BluRay format for 25 frames per second material. 24 frames per second, yes. 30 frames per second, yes. But not 25.

So while the BBC can broadcast an HD upscale at 25 fps, based on the original PAL 25 fps material, there is no way to put it on a BluRay disc without either speeding it up a little or slowing it down a little. Sure, they can pitch-shift it to make the speed change less noticeable, or keep the speed correct but have weird motion problems as frames are duplicated or dropped, but ultimately the designers of the BluRay format just never planned on a future in which PAL materials would be upscaled into HD.

It is true that 25fps progressive scan at 1920x1080 is not in the Blu-ray specs, but 1920x1080@25i certainly is - it just could not be sold in the USA. 25fps has nothing to do with PAL - 25fps is the frame rate, based on the mains frequency (50Hz in the UK against 60Hz in the US). The US analogue frame rate of 29.97 or 30fps progressive scan is also not in the Blu-ray specs either unless interlaced, just like 25fps. PAL is "Phase Alternate Line" and is for analogue TV not HD TV where it is irrelevant. There is no good reason to ever shoot anything at 25fps these days - if all were shot properly at 24fps then it would be universally possible to put this on Blu-ray.
The footage could be frame rate converted for the USA, or sold with a warning. For anyone who says frame rate conversion will degrade the footage I would reply "not half as badly as degrading from 1920x1080 in square pixels to Anamorphic SD at 720x576 pixels with a PAR of 1.4:1 is".

You don't need to touch the audio either unless running the conversion at frame by frame method - personally I can cope with a minute amount of blending compared with the massive degradation down to MPEG-2 DVD values! - we do this all the time for commercial releases and nobody complains......
