Found out today that my external hard drive has for some reason been formatted by my laptop. It had all the Bowie shows, videos, interviews I had as I thought it would be safer to save on a separate device. Not a happy bunny   :-(

Most of what I had is from this site but there's some things I purchased like Blackstar, The next Day (extra), Loving the Alien and odds and sods I got from the internet. about 7 years of archiving.

Thank you Steveboy for your very generous offer (I will replace what I can and see how it goes).
They say things come in 3's, there's my external hard drive, my windows XP desktop that's corrupted all my MIDI data from my Yamaha SY85 and lastly the Roland VS1680 16 track digital recorder I purchased has gone AWOL in the post.

To quote some of my lyrics 'Follow blind, where to you don't know, Take all punches, blow by blow'

Mike,

I am happy to help in any way I can, I have been through this twice, and it's a pain. Saved and saved yet there probably is no resolute assurance that any way of storing, allbeit CD-DVD HardDrive or what ever means is 100% safe.

Regards.
PB.

Even if someone copies you some material to another drive, are you going to wait until that one fails before you think about buying a drive to backup the files?

Had this happen as well - decided I'd just wait to see whether I actually needed any of it again!

Don't blame me, I didn't do it!

i store my backup out of my house.
for my daily files i use duplicati, makes a backup to cloud
duplicati connects to a free 1TB cloud storage space (transip.nl).
I can't find the free option anymore, but some cheap options are available

Works fine with non mapped folders

That's awful news Michael, the same issue happened with me recently. All is not lost, however.

If you are in the UK the company Data Tracks Labs: https://www.datatrack-labs.co.uk/ can, in most cases, recover your data. It will come at a cost so it depends on how precious your data is. If it's a firmware error expect to spend about £350 for recovery.

To echo what's been said here and to comment, never fill your hard drive more than two thirds full. Regularly run defragmentation on the drive, check for drivers and errors. You should get at least 3-5 years out of a drive that way - so by year 3 consider backing up onto another drive. The cloud is another option though data is limited and incurs a regular charge beyond a certain level.

I lost all my Bowie audio files, but managed to recover all my Bowie video files. I may still get my audio back, so don't despair, and if there's anything you can't recover please ask and will see what I can do. Best of Luck!

Hi Michael

If the drive stills works there's data recovery software called R-Studio you can try it out in demo mode.
If the drive hasnt been used since there's a good chance of recovery
I also use Getdata RecoverMyFiles again it can be tried out before buying.

Good luck

Thank you all for your offers to help and suggestions. My laptop still sees the external USB drive but am unable to open or format it. So in the short term I've purchased some DVD-R disks as a temporary back up and will make 2x copies of each disk and store them separately.

Hello again. An update as to what I've managed to sort out. My laptop was the problem not the ext hard drive, I reset my laptop and found a way for it to recognise said drive (good old YouTube) and as a matter of precaution I'm backing everything up on my old desktop and burning DVD's of what I think are essential files. Thank you all for your kind offers and suggestions  :)

One of the main causes of this happening is the default setting of Write Cache being enabled. This is supposed to "improve" performance, but the reality is that it is by such a tiny amount you are better off making sure write caching is disabled.
Leaving this on can mean that even if you think all files have copied, there may still be some left in this cache and unplugging the drive in this state will cause data corruption.
So you have 2 options:
1 - Disable Write Caching for all USB devices (best)
2 - Make sure you eject the USB device before unplugging it (seriously important on Linux & Mac OS)

Gutted for Michael - I can really feel it

Thanks for that tip Neil
I'm always whipping the cables out of the usb ports without ejecting the usb device. Whoops
Guess I've been lucky with my backup external hard drives so far.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/21904-enable-disable-disk-write-caching-windows-10-a.html

I don't trust the cloud cos isn't that just somebody else's server that can be corrupted?

Not read all the comments but I get the impression that solid state drives are far more reliable than disc drives (but still more expensive)
Just back up everything twice and have one of em in a different location

:)
