People just thought he would always be there, helping them cope.

Bowie’s unexpected death has seen widespread outpourings of grief across the globe and 25 of his albums leap into the world’s top 100 because people need to understand.

The most common theme being expressed at his passing was how important he had been to people, freeing them to express and re-invent themselves, explore and accept their identities, or just helping them live their lives. And he did it with style and wit and charm.

He sang of life, love, loneliness, loss and madness and entertained as he intrigued.

He didn’t just rescue Iggy Pop – he rescued all of us from our asylums.

Many have heard that in his last album, Blackstar, Bowie explores and makes art of his own death. And so the album sales are not just for nostalgia - Blackstar is now number one in 64 countries as people look for answers about his passing as they mourn a part of themselves they thought they’d never lose.

And so the artist who showed so many how they could live now shows how you can die.

David Bowie, dead at 69, alive forever.
