Hey folks... I have seen a couple of lists already of how some critics and fans are ranking 'Blackstar' against all of David's other previous album releases. And, it is ranking right up there with some of his all time classics and his fan-favorite albums. 'Blackstar', just a little over a week since being released, usually is already being ranked in the top half of all of Bowie's released albums. To me, that is quite a feat for it to be given an impressive ranking of 12th or even 10th of the very best albums that David Bowie ever released.

I thought that it might be interesting to get some you true Bowie experts and true fans opinions on this matter in an informal forum topic. Keep in mind that this listing should be based solely on your own personal taste and preference of David's music. There will be no correct scientific answer to be found or worked out and, of course, no permanent judgments to be made or inferred. You might and probably will change your mind and the ranking in the future. Let's just see how you feel now at the time...

This will be only concerning his regular album releases under the name David Bowie as well as the two Tin Machine releases. And this list does not include any live or the many compilation releases.

Here is the list of the 28 releases - just rank them in your own list from your very favorite down to your least favorite album release.

This might be interesting to see how members like the differing periods that David went through and, of course, their own personal favorite.

David Bowie (1967)
David Bowie (aka Space Oddity) (1969)
The Man Who Sold The World (1970)
Hunky Dory (1971)
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972)
Aladdin Sane (1973)
Pin Ups (1973)
Diamond Dogs (1974)
Young Americans (1975)
Station To Station (1976)
Low (1977)
Heroes (1977)
Lodger (1979)
Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) (1980)
Let's Dance (1983)
Tonight (1984)
Never Let Me Down (1987)
Tin Machine (1989)
Tin Machine II (1991)
Black Tie White Noise (1993)
The Buddha Of Suburbia (1993)
Outside (1995)
Earthling (1997)
'Hours...' (1999)
Heathen (2002)
Reality (2003)
The Next Day (2013)
Blackstar (2016)

Post your own list in a comment below to this topic. Of course, there is no hurry and this might take quite a bit of soul-searching and decision making on your part. Take your time... or, maybe, you might have this all worked out in your mind already. You smarty-pants!

OK, here's mine.

Here we go then - I couldn't bear to do my list without David Live, so I've expanded the albums list to a mere 43!

I find that Bowie albums sort of clump, for me, like the leagues in football - so the albums will move fairly freely within their league, but the leagues are a sort of clean break.  So:

PREMIER LEAGUE (would play any day of the week, without hesitating)

1. Low
2. Young Americans
3. Aladdin Sane
4. David Live
5. Tin Machine II (you guys really need to listen to this lost gem a bit more)
6. Outside
7. Diamond Dogs
8. Blackstar (obviously on constant rotation at present, but reckon it'll settle around here)
9. Scary Monsters
10. Station To Station

CHAMPIONSHIP (play less often, but always a welcome change)

11. The Next Day
12. Earthling
13. The Man Who Sold The World
14. Liveandwell.com
15. A Reality Tour
16. Hunky Dory
17. All Saints
18. Buddha Of Suburbia
19. Bowie At The Beeb
20. ...hours

LEAGUE ONE (mostly stay on the shelf, but still songs that I love on all of them)

21. Ziggy Stardust
22. David Bowie (aka Space Oddity)
23. Let's Dance
24. Santa Monica Civic
25. Nassau Coliseum 76 (live bonuses from Station To Station box)
26. Stage
27. Lodger
28. Heroes
29. Labyrinth
30. Heathen
31. Storytellers (to be honest, only listened to it once, but very entertaining)
32. BBC Radio Theatre June 27 2000 (bonus disc with Bowie At The Beeb)
33. Ziggy Stardust The Motion Picture
34. Tin Machine
35. Toy

LEAGUE TWO (frankly, I wish that someone else had recorded these)

36. Black Tie White Noise (used to be in last place for me, moving in the right direction!)
37. Glass Spider (Montreal) Live (CD included with the DVD release)
38. Oy Vey Baby
39. David Bowie (the Deram album)
40. Reality
41. Tonight
42. Pinups
43. Never Let Me Down

Hey, simmdale - what's yours?

Hey there folks... I see that there are already BIG differences in just the few lists posted already. And you, steve23yh, you have a novel way that you have separated the releases... but it all makes perfect sense to me. I also didn't think of 'Toy' but I think that it would surely have to be considered an "album" release. I must admit that you have listed several releases that I have never even had in my collection (yet). As for my list, that is something that I am still working on... and, DAMN, to me it is somewhat hard to put some albums below others because there are particular songs from some releases that are just so "great" in the context of an arguably "weaker" album release. And those songs mean a lot to me, just by themselves.

I will get around to posting mine, but I think that I will limit myself to just the 28 (29) titles for mine because I am finding it difficult enough already to "rank" works of art (you can read those last three words as Bowie's releases).

I hope others will continue to offer up their lists, as I am finding this somewhat fascinating how others see all the releases in their own "different light", and it being so different from how other people view the same albums.

Of course, you can also rank as many of his releases as you want like steve23yh did on his list. There is no strict limit on the number of releases that you have to follow in making your own personal list.

Really difficult to do but, based on my small collection of 'official' releases, this is my two pennyworth for what I'd listen to if I was stuck in the car for 12 hours or more!

Thankfully Tonight was the last vinyl album I bought of his when it came out and that, combined with the awful Glass Spider tour I saw at Wembley a few years later (so why do I download '87 shows I ask myself..?! 8o), was so rubbish I never bought anything else he issued until around 8 years or so ago when I got back into him again after buying a combined Outside/Heathen CD cheap in Asda's (I think) so I was 'spared' the pain of buying and listening to 'Never Let me Down'. I'm proud to say that I don't own a copy and, judging by the list so far, I'm clearly not missing much! :D

1. Station to Station to Station Live – official release
2. Bowie at the Beeb
3. David Live
4. Blackstar
5. Heroes
6. 1.Outside
7. Rarest One Bowie
8. Live Santa Monica
9. Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars – The motion picture soundtrack
10. Low
11. Station to Station
12. Young Americans
13. Hunky Dory
14. Aladdin Sane
15. Diamond Dogs
16. Ziggy Stardust
17. The Man Who Sold The World
18. Reality
19. Heathen
20. Outside
21. Hours
22. The Next Day
23. Scary Monsters
24. Space Oddity
25. Pinups
26. Lodger
27. Changes One Bowie
28. Stage
29. Lets Dance
30. Images
31. Tonight

As nearly ALLof David's records are my most beloved, I can only say which are the not so very much beloved, as are :

Tonight,
Black Tie, White Noise
Never Let Me Down.......
....and in each of this 3 are songs I love...What can You do ????

all others are so near to each other in my list, I can't classify which is more beloved than what other....

So many people are against BTWN! What's the deal?!  8o  :D

Well, I can't really put a normal list of ranks, because it changes every day. One day/week I might be stuck on Space Oddity (sometimes just the song), and next day/week I'm after The Next Day. Or only live shows. Or even Never Let Me Down... (that has happened  :-@ )
After I heard the news I was stuck on Blackstar for 3 days. [Looking for answers I guess...].
Today it was Young Americans + Station To Station...  O:-D

I'm still sad but I can participate in this rank.

Now, the number one is Blackstar (2016) since is out. I was waiting for this album since 1997.

But :

my all time favorites (alphabetical order) :

Aladdin Sane (1973)
Diamond Dogs (1974)
"Heroes" (1977) (with " "please)
Lodger (1979)
Low (1977)
Outside (1995) (its last best work before Blackstar and I'm still waiting for the complete sessions)
Scary Monsters... And Super Creeps (1980) (my first one)
The Man Who Sold The World (1970)

my other favorites :

Black Tie White Noise (1993)
David Bowie (1967)
David Bowie (aka Man Of Words/Man Of Music and Space Oddity) (1969)
Earthling (1997)
'Hours...' (1999
Hunky Dory (1971)
Pin Ups (1973)
Station To Station (1976)
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972)
Young Americans (1975)

except a few songs, I don't often listen to these albums :

Let's Dance (1983) (I like it anyway)
The Buddha Of Suburbia (1993)
Tonight (1984)
Never Let Me Down (1987) (but my first Bowie gig is a Glass Spider Tour one)
Heathen (2002)
Reality (2003)
The Next Day (2013) (false start return for me, I suspect songs are from the vaults mainly and I HATE the sleeve)

not Bowie albums to me but I like it very much :
Tin Machine (1989)
Tin Machine II (1991)

Toy is nice (I hate record companies !).

This is a good exercise - time for a re-evaluation of Reality, several contributors appear to rate it very low but I think it's nice!

My favourites -

Diamond Dogs
Station to Station
Ziggy Stardust
Scary Monsters
Heathen
Hunky Dory
The Man Who Sold The World
1. Outside
Aladdin Sane
Low

The only albums I never play are Pinups and Tonight

Well, at least you haven't admitted listening to "Tonight" which seems to be almost universally (so far anyway) ranked lower than the lowest thing you can imagine! :D
