I love that Strange Fascination bootleg so much, that I made my own cover.

The lookalike font for the David Live album, is Doulos.

http://www.dafont.com/doulos-sil.font?text=DAVID+LIVE

You have to line-up the individual letters yourself though, because the tracking is so random.

Here's an original promo for the David Live album.

Here's my covers that I made for the boot.

Hope the concert gets an official release on the next Five Years (Golden Years?) box set, in perfect quality.

Hi CensoredSane

Thanks for your suggestion.
Your Doulos font is not far of, but it is not the one used on the cover for David Live.
Look at the P and the R, the top half of the letters are wider, the line the comes down on the R is pointy, it does not have feet, and the A is flat on top not pointy.
As far as I could find out Doulos is from 1992.

In general when looking for what typeface that is used on an album you cant always trust the advertising used for the albums, especially with the earlier records, they are not always made by the same designer and might not be using the typeface used on the record, so always use the record as your main guide.
The advertising you have above looks to use the right typeface, when you compare with the text you have put below on the image the advertising is on top of, you can easily see the differences. I suggest that you use a bit more spacing, the letters don't touch if you want it to look like the David Live cover, you have better spacing on the cover you did.

I'm sure the next Bowie 5 year box whatever its gonna be called will be created like the first, only containing already released material, so no chance of Strange Fascination being in there.

All that said, I still haven't found the right typeface for David Live.

Edit - your name being censored is properly because of a certain Canadian so called singers name cant be mentioned in the forum    :-@

I just had a look again this morning at the cover of David Live and used the little wonder myfonts font finder that Rob linked to earlier. Not as fun as stumbling around the world of type but very efficient. Among the suggestions it came up with there is no doubt it is Romana that was used on the cover.

Romana is a French typeface from 1860 by Theophile Beaudoire, based on the capitals of Lyon from 1846 by Louis Perrin.

That's kind of hilarious. It's actually my real name too. I mean J.U.S.T.I.N. not B.I.E.B.E.R. I'm not him. Ha! Ha!

I have added the typeface from The Man Who Fell To Earth 1976 movie poster to the list.
It is Metal Lord.
It is a redrawn version from 1996 of the one used on the movie poster, fun fact, it was also used for Iron Maiden in 1980.

Hi Sundust welcome to BowieStation

Happy that you also like getting into typefaces.
I keep updating this whenever I get some new knowledge, in the list in the first entry in this thread.
I am really happy when someone contributes with some info, not only on what have been used on the Lp's but also from other Bowie related stuff.
Some of the fonts are difficult to get, but some can easily be found in places like dafont and ufonts.

The Reality fonts are:

Drone (Regular)
Drone (Bold)
Melancholia (Regular)

Drone was used for most album headline copy, whereas Drone Bold was used on most of the Reality Tour headline copy (posters etc). You can get the dot in the O by toggling between caps and lowercase. It's a slightly different typeface variation when you use caps. Melancholia was used for all the body copy/plain text and detailed (non-headline) information. :love

Thanks Spaceboy89
I had forgotten about the dot in the O switch, and did not know the other one is Melancholia
now I have to find that one  :D

They forgot about Melancholia when they did the new credits on the back of the Lp version Reality, but that fits with the booklet that is a bad blow up from the one for the cd, one should think that that had kept the original files and the could use those to scale up for the Lp booklet.

I had to google a bit to find the Drone Bold on the posters, yep its there, it is really not a pretty typeface, the reg is a lot better, but then again I am in general not a Barnbrook fan.

You would think that they've got the original files saved as digitals somewhere. Although maybe Rex Ray had the original files, as he designed the artwork. And now that Rex Ray is no longer with us it might not be easy to find. Who knows :?

I agree with the Drone Bold type, it's not the greatest (and not Barnbrook's greatest work). I'm not a fan either, and feel Bowie's last two albums were overly conceptualised in design. Blackstar would have looked beautiful with the low style profile/portrait photo (the one inside the gatefold sleeve) with the bowie star font icon overlaid. The conceptual design really worked for The Next Day, but imo not as well for Blackstar. If you struggle to find Melancholia send me a PM  :o)

It been a while since I last had an update for the typefaces.

I have just read an article abut a live event where four people discussed Bowie related type.
Julian Morey was talking about the album The Visitor, that is the album at the end of The Man Who Fell To Earth, with Newtons music on it. Julian said that the typeface is Melior, by Hermann Zapf 1952. I checked it out and it looks absolutely right.
Julian also says that the train in the photo is the Santa Fe 2926, that you have to check yourself
:D

There was not a lot of news in the rest of the article, but its is still a nice one:

Hi Panopticon

Yep, it was posted  :D
If you look at the very first entrance, I list (and keep updating) all of what is gathered here, so it is easy access the typeface info.
I am always very happy to get new info or perspectives on the typefaces.
