AS far as I remember it's just before they played 'Knock on Wood'? I'll double-check later though.

Nope. The 'Now youre gonna see elephants...' shout out is just before the band intros between Rock'n'roll Suicide and John Im Only Dancing (again).
Its on the bootlegs but was cut out from Cracked Actor official album, as were most of his other audience shout outs. (The power of the columbian marching powder, eh?).

I once read that he supposedly said "Now you're gonna see all of us".
To me, it still sounds like "elephants".

If there were a clapping emoji / emoticon here, I would use it now.

I don't care what made him say it, if that's what he said, and it always sounded like that, I love it.  :-)

It sure sounds like 'Now you gonna see Elephant' to me, too.
I don't get the fake Italian accent - as Besomdave said thpugh - the power of the Marching Powder!

Really? Bowie obviously says "all of us" as the band were allowed to come out of the shadows as the show got closer to the end.

Another vote for Elephants here. It sounds like it to me (and has done for 30-odd years), and is preceded with him throughout the show alluding to strange showbiz sights like 'have we gotta a bigga show for you tonight!' with the promise of ladies in high heels etc. Even just before he claims the show was 'A big success huh!' The implication is now they make it even bigger with.. gasp! Elephants!

'Seeing the elephant' was a popular if antiquated phrase for brothels in the US, it also implies that he would promise the audience something he could not deliver. This could obviously imply the revealing of the band, a funny joke at their expense, but most footage of this leg of the tour shows the band were visible throughout with the addition of the backing singers and the transformation of it into a soul revue. The stage set was ditched within days.

Either way, I'll have some of what he was having that night please  :D

I have hated so many Bowie bootleg titles, as they take some out of context quote and bestow it on some concert as if it's meaningful.

On the other hand, I think it's a big missed opportunity that this show was never bootlegged as "Now you're going to see elephants!".

Oddly enough, and this may be utterly imaginary, I am certain I recall reading something about Elephants at MSG in a Bowie context but for the life of me I cannot recall anything more.....

Yep, I remember that being discussed, I think on Bowie Wonderworld?

I vaguely recall someone saying about the smell of elephant dung in the MSG? Someone else added that elephants were used in circus or other events there?

Rock stars are known for getting cities mixed up ("last time in London for this one!", from the man himself before playing Ziggy Stardust at Milton Keynes in 1990) - so maybe he thought he was in the New York MSG when he shouted "now you're going to see elephants!".

:)

MSG 1978. I think Visconti mentioned it in the Stage 2005 reissue sleevenotes?

The worst (or best, depending on which rival city you're from) from Bowie, was opening the 1987 gig at Sunderland, by saying 'good evening Newcastle' :D

@ stranger09 and Mr Wilkes

"Elephants is referenced at the begining of band intro at the end of track Rock 'N' Roll Suicide "It's a Bigga Success Uh ? Now you gunna see Elephants !! " (slight Italian accent) intros band and next track which is the final encore track John, I'm Only Dancing (Again) on the (Strange Facination bootleg)

He always tickled my funny spot with his statements.
:D PB.

I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.

If Nacho does more work on 1974 videos, I want him to do a fancy lip synch at the start to Bowie shouting "now you gonna see elephants!".

That could make his next video go viral  :)

exactly correct.
It's the second paragraph in the sleeve notes, and is because the circus is in town - but this is several years later (2 at least) so cannot be related.

I know you didn't say it was related - I implied it though when I first said about reading it somewhere.
