Hi All,

This site has been a quite remarkable place to gather Bowie material over the years. A true testament to the people who have maintained and created this wonderful domain.

I am in awe of the quality of the material and the incredible wealth of knoweledge put out by everyone that contributes. You all know who you are.

My question is so what is left ?? Any more SBD quality live concerts, any more unreleased tracks, interviews, TV and radio sessions, studio sessions....

Anything left in the Ether would like to hear peoples thoughts.

Cheers.
PB

The Beckenham Arts Lab recordings, lent out at the Beckenham library recordings may be still 'out there'. This was / is stated in the timeline section on Bowie Wonderworld, so I believe it's based on fact, not rumour.

Also I read years back from a guy on twitter that he rented a room from Guy Stevens' (Mott The Hoople producer, etc) mum once, and he'd left some tapes that included a recording (audience, I think) of the Beckhenham Arts Festival. Sadly, he did not procure a copy. I seem to recall him mentioning - possibly from hearsay rather than hearing the tape - that Bowie did a reggae version of Space Oddity that day!

Having discussed this with someone recently, futile as it might seem I am intending to try making some enquires at Beckhenham library if I can get there next week, as I should be in the area. I doubt it will lead to anything (no I am not expecting them to say, ah "here they are, how many Arts Lab recordings would you like to borrow?";). Maybe it might reveal names of people involved. Probably the same track some have tried before, but sometimes even a near futile search can lead to something...

God, I hate to nit pick - especially with you Steve, but there are 5 tracks from Boston '72 available officially, not 3/4.....
I also have it on pretty good authority that from 97 onwards - possibly 95 onwards but definitely 97, that every show played was recorded to DAT.
Also there is the concert film done by ALan Yentob for the Cracked Actor docco - the whole show was filmed at Universal Ampitheatre, and it's possible that this is where the great quality recording came from as it's definitely not just some happy arsehole stood in front of the stacks with his portable Binatone cassette recorder. The quality is just too damned good for that, plus it's stereo - narrow, yes (which in itself is another clue) but not mono.
Another set would be the stereo mixes of the early 70's BBC sessions. All the officially rekleased stuff has been mono to date, but the stereo versions do exist and some have surfaced on ROIO releases.

There is undoubtedly much more besides

So from what people are saying there is still a shed load of material yet to surface.
You see what I dont get is the fact that the fanbase is getting older and deminishing so why is the material being kept back , why is there not any new releases or good willed people not putting it out there for purchase or sharing.
It irritates me to wait so long in between snippets of releases why not all at once.

Rick Wakeman admitted to hearing or having the various versions and attempts of the Life on Mars sessions, where Rono took the lead during the recordings.

Also did anyone else pick up on the sleeve notes from the 50 th Farewell show release , where Pennebaker admitted to filming the night before - ie 2.7.73 - so does that video still exist?  Also can't believe RCA would set up to record for a new laser disc concept and audio recording of the show without a trail run first- so again the 2.7.73 -is probably out there .

Lulu in the Guardian confirmed recording Dodo and Can you hear me , but also one other - what was it ?

The tantalising list continues

This really nails it. I'm in my 20s but most Bowie fans... are not. Not that people my age have the big money for big boxed sets anyway. We all just want the music out there, the estate is losing money by waiting until the largest part of the fanbase is gone.

AFAIK, the Lulu tracks were Dodo, Watch That Man & The Man Who Sold The World on a single plus an alternate mix of The Man Who Sold The World. I have all 4 of these.
Never heard of her doing 'Can You Hear Me?' though - that's a genuine rarey!

In all honesty I really don't care for the Lulu tracks apart from being a bit of a completist as far as I am able.
Ava Cherry - there are at least 3 versions of the Astronettes Trident sessions and there may well be more. Unless you are thinking of the flip to the 'Sweet Thing' acetate?

Official releases cannot be shared here, but if anyone does want them you know what to do.
I have to correct myself here too - there are 3 different versions of 'The Man Who Sold The World':
The single A-Side (runs at 3:54)
The Alternate mix (runs at 4:30)
a version from 'The David Bowie Story' (runs at 3:16, may be edited though - will check & post back)
The others are of course 'Watch That Man' (B-side of TMWSTW) at 5:06 and 'Dodo' at 4:29.
Still cannot find out what the 4th one is....

EDIT.
The one from the broadcast does not sound the same as either of the other 2.....may be down to mastering...I will investigate

Gail said that his studio version of Oh Superman is somewhere on YouTube.
I already looked and only found the live versions.

I don't know which version was on that, but it could be one of the TV performances - one on Sez Les which uses a new backing track by the show band, or from It's Lulu with a live vocal much louder over another new sound-a-like version with lots of brass. There's another version from (I think) Disco, which is the studio cut but in mono. Youtube uploads stick the stereo version over it.
