The People's History of Pop

Episode 2 of 5 - 1966-1976: The Love Affair

Writer, journalist and broadcaster Danny Baker looks at the years of his youth - 1966 to 1976 - a time when music fans really let rip.

From the psychedelia of the Beatles' Sgt Pepper to the birth of the large-scale music festival, this is when hair, sounds and ideas got wilder and looser as a whole new generation of fans got really serious about British pop music and the world around them.

There is testimony from hippies who found love and happiness at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival, from a teenager growing up in Birmingham who discovered a new sound called 'heavy metal', and from fans sent wild with excitement after David Bowie and Marc Bolan were beamed down and glam rock was born.

A shy young man tells how he found expression through progressive rock, a fan relives her weekend escapes to Wigan Casino and a new scene called northern soul, and a young man discovers a new hero as reggae becomes mainstream.

Unearthed pop treasures include a rare item of clothing worn by Marc Bolan and given to a young fan as a gift after he knocked on Marc's door. A former teacher and pupil of Peckham Manor School are reunited, more than forty years after they witnessed an unknown Bob Marley perform in their sports hall, and rare photos of the event are shown.
Plus, some rare and special material from the biggest star of the 70s himself - David Bowie.

Wow! That 68 demo of Space Oddity was amazing. Do you think we'll EVER get an official release of it?  Am I right in thinking that it's never been bootlegged? I've certainly never heard it.

Sounded like the Clarence Road version - widely bootlegged.
Released officially by Ryko.

KC states that Bowie did "all the voices, guitars, everything.."  - but isn't that Hutch's voice singing the part of Ground Control?

The version from last night sounds very much like the version on CD1 "Sound+Vision Box" - RYKO RCD90120.

The version last night was a 7" vinyl with just one side. I guess that makes it an acetate.
They played a sound file, not the disc (as acetates wear out quickly).

KC said "this is David's copy of the original Space Oddity recorded in 68, .. wasn't released until July 69 of course .. But that's not the released one is it? ...  this is completely unique in .. no other copies around just David by himself doing everything the stylophone and the guitar and all the voices."

I believe there is a difference which I will try to explain.
Toward the end of the 3-2-1 countdown, someone (Bowie?) says "Blast Off".

In last nights version it goes; "God's love be with you ... BLAST OFF"
(at around 53 seconds)

In the Ryko RCD90120 there are clearly either two people together or it is two vocal tracks and it goes; "God's BLAST OFF love be with you" also the stylophone from that point is a little different.
